Supports Query Data Elements:

Layers: Description: Point locations for Edmonton Public School Division schools operating in the 2025-26 school year. Attributes record the name, grade configuration, street address, telephone and email contact details and website for each school, any special educational needs (Division Centre) and alternative programming offered, the Growth Control Model level and indicators for closed boundary and lottery status, and the ESPB planning area, sector, Transportation Zone, ward, and City of Edmonton ward in which the school lies. Classroom Complexity Data:Data sourced from school authority self-reported data collected through Alberta Classroom Insights Portal (ACIP) as of November 24, 2025.Data set includes schools in public, separate, and francophone school/regional authorities. Schools identified as alternative programs, outreach/online or special-purpose schools are not included in this analysis. Data set includes classrooms with enrolment provided as between 1 and 60 students, with a valid grade range, and for subjects other than special education. Data allocated with an asterisk are classrooms identified with fewer than 10 students. For analysis purposes these records were assigned a NULL Value. A classroom is based on the portion of time a group of students is instructed by a teacher. As each teacher with an unique student group counts as a separate classroom, the same student information may be recorded in multiple classrooms. Students may be identified in multiple complexity categories simultaneously.Composition: Number of complexity categories in each classroom. Complexity categories include: English as an Additional Languages (EAL); Mild/Moderate needs; Severe needs; Individualized Program Plan (IPP); First Nations, Métis and Inuit; Gifted; Refugee; Waitlist for Assessment; and Other. - High: 7 or more - Medium: 4 to 6 - Low: 0 to 3 Occurrence Rate: Number of students in each classroom with the following complexity needs: English as an Additional Languages (EAL), Mild/Moderate, and/or Severe. - High: 11 or more students with these complexity needs - Medium: 5 to 10 students with these complexity needs - Low: 0 to 4 students with these complexity needsFor the November 2025 data collection, school authorities reported students using categories that included “mild/moderate code” and “severe code.” While special education codes are not required in order to access services for students enrolled in school (meaning that coding is not tied to funding), the data collected may have referenced the Government of Alberta’s Special Education Coding Criteria or used locally developed indicators—such as assessments, teacher observations, or school based team reviews—to determine alignment with the broad categories. The data collection was designed to ensure that the breadth of classroom complexity factors was measured and will include students without the requirement for formal diagnosis, but who may still have a need for substantial instructional supports.
